Information about the track
One of the eight NZ Great Walks, highly-maintained tracks with serviced huts (flushing toilets, gas for your stoves, and a hut warden to give you weather advice). It is a 32-km, 2-4 day track. Passes through beech-forested valleys, alongside crystal clear rivers, past alpine lakes, and across a mountain pass.
As well as the main track there are several side trips (Conical Hill and Key Summit) that are worth checking out
I would recommend the Routeburn Flats Hut as the first hut if you are a beginner, or with a family, or just want some quite. It makes the second day much longer, but worth it for the peaceful location of the hut (and the handful of residents).
